Do I need ADA compliant signs in Warren, MI? This is a common question posed to our signage experts at Majestic Sign & Design. Retailers, office managers and commercial property owners want to follow the law to the letter, but sometimes it can get a little bit confusing. After all, you do not want to face a complaint from a customer.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guarantees the civil rights of those with physical limitations. These limitations occasionally make it difficult to enjoy access to buildings and information in the same manner as those do who do not live with the disabilities.
At this time, there are two different signage standards. When the Act first passed in 1990, it set the rules for signs at that time. If you operate a facility that has signage in accordance with official 1991 rules, you do not have to make any changes. On the other hand, if you are adding new signs or are placing signs for the first time, note that these signs must comply with 2010 standards of the updated Act. Interestingly, ADA rules do not apply for temporary signs that you put up for fewer than seven days.

Keeping visitors and customers safe is just as important as helping them find their way through corridors, mazes of shelves and stairwells. There are a number of safety guidelines that you are wise to follow in your business.
- Mark stairwells. Identify the stair well as well as the floor level with a sign measuring at least 18 inches in height and 12 inches in width. This signage must be tactile.
- Know where to mount signs. For a single door, ADA-compliant signage should be mounted on the side of the latch. If you have double doors, mount the sign to the right. Do not mount your wall signs higher than 80 inches from the floor.
- Follow size guidelines. Having the letters at a two-inch height is usually a good idea. If the sign is farther away, it may be necessary increase the letter height by another inch. When you choose the Helvetica Regular font, your signs will look quite attractive.
You may wonder which type of signage is considered a standard wayfinding marker and which would be considered an actual safety sign. When you walk through your facility and imagine a blind visitor walking alongside you, would it be difficult for the individual to find the restrooms, the stairwells and the exit? As a general rule of thumb, it is always a good idea to have all wayfinding and safety signage adhere to the ADA standard even if it is not mandated. It is simply a matter of common courtesy.
